MARYLAND, USA — A multi-vehicle crash Saturday morning closed all westbound lanes for 6 hours on the Chesapeake Bay Bridge.
Eleven people were transported to area hospitals with non-life threatening injuries. Two people were transported with serious injuries, according to the Maryland Transportation Authority (MDTA).
MDTA detectives said preliminarily they believe 23 vehicles were involved in a chain reaction crash along the westbound lanes. As a result, an additional 20 vehicles were involved in secondary crashes.
Initial calls came in about the crash at 8 a.m., according to MDTA.
Eastbound and westbound traffic were alternating on the eastbound span until about 2 p.m. on Saturday. Two-way operations were prohibited due to fog and limited visibility, according to MDTA.
There is no information yet on what caused the crash. Anyone who witnessed the crashes is asked to contact the MDTA police at 443-454-8703.
