WASHINGTON — CVS is planning more closures throughout the district.
On Friday, a spokesperson for CVS announced that select CVS Pharmacy in Target locations will be closing in early 2024.
Pharmacy closures will begin in February and continue through April. In a press release CVS said, all employees impacted by the closures will be offered “comparable roles within the company”.
Closing CVS Pharmacy in Target locations and dates:
- 1515 NEW YORK AVENUE, NE closing 02/29/2024.
- 4500 WISCONSIN AVE NW closing 03/07/2024.
- 7828 GEORGIA AVE NW closing 03/14/2024.
CVS says the closures are part of its plan to reduce store and pharmacy density. They are basing their evaluation on changes in population, consumer buying patterns, and future health needs.
On Monday, CVS announced they would be closing its Columbia Heights location by the end of February.
In Oct. of 2023, WUSA9's Leslie Moreno reported that customers visiting the pharmacy were shocked to find the store nearly empty. Employees told us then that the store is consistently ransacked, even going so far to say that thieves target the store on new shipment days and steal merchandise before it even makes it onto the store shelves.
“Older guys, young, any age, come in, they get trash bags full," a CVS employee who wanted to remain anonymous told WUSA9. "They take anything, everything!”
Staff said the thieves almost always purposely leave a mess behind. Many times, customers are in the store as it's happening.
There will still be 50 CVS Pharmacy locations throughout Washington, D.C. Before closing any pharmacy all prescriptions will be transferred to the nearest CVS Pharmacy location.
