FAUQUIER COUNTY, Va. — Two people were injured Thursday morning in a crash involving a school bus and a deer in Fauquier County. Fire and rescue crews say no children were on the bus at the time of the crash.
Volunteer firefighters in Warrenton were sent to the scene of the crash at 8730 James Madison Highway just after 7:15 a.m. The initial call was for multiple people trapped, however when EMS arrived, they found two people injured and a school bus on its side, but there was no one trapped in the bus.
The school bus driver was driving on Route 29 southbound, swerved across the median and across northbound traffic, then into an embankment, causing the school bus to flip onto its side.
A spokesperson for Fauquier County Department of Fire and Rescue said the two people injured were both employees of Fauquier County Public Schools (FCPS) -- a bus driver and an aid.
The bus driver was checked out on scene and refused further treatment. The aid was flown to Fairfax Hospital with serious but not life-threatening injuries, according to Jeffrey Long, a spokesperson Fauquier County Sherriff's Office.
Officials said the crash was caused by a deer. Crashes involving deer are expected to increase, according to Long, because of commuting times coinciding with dawn and dusk.
