WASHINGTON — A jury has found a D.C. man guilty of assault and other gun-related charges for threatening several people inside a Wawa in Northwest.

On Tuesday, Charles Edwards, 48, was found guilty of two counts of assault with a dangerous weapon, two counts of possession of a firearm during a crime of violence, and other firearm-related charges for threatening another man and a cashier with a gun inside the Wawa at Thomas Circle on Jan. 22, 2022.

According to evidence presented during the trial, Edwards got into an argument with another man near the Wawa. That man ran into the store to get away from Edwards, but Edwards followed him and again confronted him.

A Special Police Officer working at the Wawa escorted Edwards out of the store, however, minutes later, Edwards went back to the store and again chased the man around. He pulled out a loaded gun at this moment and pointed it at both the man and Wawa's cashier who was standing in front of him. Edwards eventually left the store and threatened the Special Police Officer, who was on the phone with 911.

Police arrived within minutes, and took Edwards into custody. A loaded weapon was recovered in his tent.

Investigators say Edwards was later arrested on Aug. 17, 2022. Sentencing for Edwards is scheduled for Feb. 23.
