Officers arrested and charged 40-year-old Alfonso Alegria with assault with a dangerous weapon for his alleged involvement in the attack.

WASHINGTON — Detectives with the Metropolitan Police Department have arrested a man for attacking two people with a hammer inside a liquor store on Halloween day in Northeast, D.C.

At 2:01 on Oct. 31, officers say the suspect walked into Noma Wine & Liquor, located on Patterson Street in NE. He was immediately recognized by an employee from another incident that occurred the day prior. Once inside the store, he took two bottles of tequila and ran towards the exit without paying. An employee of the store jumped over the counter at this point and tried to stop the man from fleeing. At this point, the suspect pulled out a hammer and began to strike the employee numerous times all over the body. Investigators say the suspect fled on foot before police could arrive at the scene.

The victim in this case refused medical attention and is predicted to be ok.

On Thursday, officers arrested and charged 40-year-old Alfonso Alegria with assault with a dangerous weapon for his alleged involvement in the attack.

Anyone with information on this hammer attack is asked to call detectives with the Metropolitan Police Department at (202) 727-9099 or text the department's tip line at 50411.
