ALEXANDRIA, Va. — A 20-year-old Alexandra man faces prison time in connection to the death of his friend. Junior Espinal Calix pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter on October 26 after accidentally shooting and killing his friend.
Earlier this year, on February 17, Calix and Nabel Christopher Chavez were hanging out inside someone’s home located on E. Reed Avenue in Alexandria, Virginia. While the two were hanging out, Calix pulled out a gun (a Polymer80 9mm pistol).
Investigators say Calix admitted that he intentionally pointed the gun at Chavez. When questioned why, he said that he often just “plays” around with the gun.
Calix says he thought he emptied the chamber and removed the magazine before he started playing with the gun. Sadly, when he pulled the trigger, he quickly found out the gun was not empty.
Calix accidentally shot Chavez in the head, where he died at the scene. After a thorough investigation, evidence found that Calix was telling the truth about the shooting being accidental.
Calix entered his plea without a plea agreement. His sentencing date is set for December 21. The maximum sentencing for an involuntary manslaughter charge in Virginia is ten years.
Calix has been released on bond while he awaits his sentencing date.
