Students fight book bans during National Day of Social Action | Get Uplifted

Students got a real-world lesson on social responsibility.

TEMPLE HILLS, Md. — Young people across the national and here at home are getting socially active, and that is getting us uplifted.

During the summer months, the Children's Defense Fund, which is based in D.C., holds summer schools across the country called Freedom Schools. The goal is to prevent the so-called "summer slide" and promote reading among students from kindergarten through 12th grade.

This month, the 13,000 kids who take part in the Freedom Schools all participated in what they call the National Day of Social Action. It's when young people participate in events that tackle an impactful social issue. This year's topic was stopping book bans and promoting the freedom to read.

Locally, students at the Freedom School in Temple Hills, Maryland marched around Howard University and went to HU's School of Business to learn how to market and brand their campaign promoting literacy.

They also visited the Sankofa Bookstore near the campus to buy some banned books.

Teaching real-world lessons outside the classroom, and teaching social responsibility has us feeling uplifted.
