Maryland summer camp caters to kids with heart conditions | Get Uplifted

Upbeat Hearts allows kids to experience summer fun without the fear of a medical setback.

MONKTON, Md. — With the summer months in full swing, many kids are enjoying camps of all kinds around the DMV before heading back to the classroom. We want to feature a special camp for children living with heart conditions.

Over the weekend, the University of Maryland Children's Hospital hosted its first-ever Upbeat Hearts camp. The hospital says that many of their campers underwent open-heart surgery within days of being born and have gone through additional surgeries since.

Upbeat Hearts is filled with what the hospital calls "heroic" young people, and it gives them the opportunity to experience the happiness that summer camps offer without the fear of suffering a medical setback, because the entire program is designed by the University of Maryland Children's Hospital Pediatric Cardiology team.

Activities were held at Camp Running Bear in Monkton, Maryland. It featured water games, hiking, dancing, arts and crafts and of course, yummy food.

Making sure all kids have the opportunity to have summertime fun has us feeling uplifted!
