PRINCE WILLIAM COUNTY, Va. — A traffic stop turned into a high-speed pursuit on Interstate 66 on Sunday. Deputies initially tried to stop the driver for having no state inspection sticker or brake lights.
According to Virginia State Police, a deputy tried to pull the man's Toyota Sienna over on I-66 around 1 p.m. He refused to stop and the deputy gave chase in his cruiser. The driver drove east on I-66 into Prince William County, at times reaching speeds of 100 mph. The driver continued onto Route 234, where he ran several red lights, weaving in and out of traffic, deputies said. Eventually the Toyota headed back onto eastbound I-66.
As deputies tried to bring the Toyota to a stop, it collided with a cruiser. The impact caused the Toyota to also hit an eastbound Subaru Outback, and the pursuit ended. The driver, Juntae E. Williams, 27, was taken into custody.
After being treated for minor injuries from the crash, Williams was taken to jail where he is being held without bond.
He faces several charges, including hit and run, assault on a police officer and child neglect, since he had a pregnant passenger in in the car at the time. He was also charged with several traffic infractions, deputies said.
The passenger was also treated for minor injuries at a nearby hospital. She was released and not charged.
Deputies say a search of the Toyota found about $1,000 worth of stolen merchandise inside. Additional charges are pending and the investigation remains ongoing, according to deputies.
