MCLEAN, Va. — The National Park Service has reopened the George Washington Memorial Parkway to drivers. The northern part of the Parkway from I-495 to Spout Run was closed Monday, due to severe winter weather in the region.
While the Parkway is back open, the Park Service reminds drivers to stay alert while driving through the construction zone, and obey the 40 mph speed limit. Drivers should also expect delays through narrow travel lanes, and plan alternate routes. Due to weather, the traffic configuration will be single lane through the construction corridor both north and southbound, the Park Service said.
Officials said the closure was necessary to ensure the proper treatment of the roadway and to restore the parkway to safe travel conditions. Crews are required to use smaller equipment than usual to accommodate the lane widths and configurations. Another closure could happen Friday, with more snow in the forecast.
The northern part of the parkway is undergoing a $161 million rehabilitation project.
The northern section of the parkway, which was originally completed in 1962, has never undergone major rehabilitation, according to the Park Service. It's the busiest section of the parkway, serving about 26 million drivers annually.
