ALEXANDRIA, Va. — National Park Service officials are giving the public an update on a major rehabilitation project on George Washington Memorial Parkway. It's a multi-year, $161 million project impacting the northern section of the road.
Editor's note: The above video is from April 2023.
The northern section of the parkway, which was originally completed in 1962, has never undergone major rehabilitation, according to the Park Service. It's the busiest section of parkway, serving about 26 million drivers annually. Through the rehabilitation of this historic parkway, which was established as a recreation and environmental conservation area to serve pleasure traffic, the NPS will ensure that the parkway remains a viable, critical link in the regional transportation network, as well as a national park.
The project includes:
replacing the asphalt pavement
redesigning of the Route 123 interchange
repairing stormwater management systems
reconstructing stone walls and roadside barriers
rehabilitating the historic overlooks
lengthening entrance and exit lanes at some interchanges
reopening historic views along the parkway
On Thursday, NPS will hold a virtual meeting with the public to give an update on construction progress, the upcoming traffic shift from I-495 to Route 123, inclement weather event planning and future construction activities, followed by a question-and-answer session.
The meeting will be held on Zoom at 7 p.m. For information on how to attend, click here.
