MCLEAN, Va. — The National Park Service has shut down part of the George Washington Memorial Parkway on Monday amid the ongoing winter weather in the region. The Parkway is closed from I-495 to Spout Run until further notice, the Park Service said.
Officials say the closure is necessary to ensure the proper treatment of the roadway and to restore the parkway to safe travel conditions. Crews are required to use smaller equipment than usual to accommodate the lane widths and configurations.
The park service says it will work diligently to treat the road for drivers. Drivers should anticipate delays in reopening the northern section of he parkway. Plan to use alternate routes.
The announcement comes as the northern part of the parkway is undergoing a $161 million rehabilitation project.
The northern section of the parkway, which was originally completed in 1962, has never undergone major rehabilitation, according to the Park Service. It's the busiest section of parkway, serving about 26 million drivers annually.
