FAIRFAX COUNTY, Va. — The Fairfax County Police Department (FCPD) issued more than 7,000 citations and warnings during the fourth wave of its 2024 "Road Shark" traffic safety campaign.
Working with the Virginia State Police, FCPD officers say they targeted motorists engaged in reckless driving and similar dangerous behaviors in high-traffic areas to dole out the citations and warnings between Aug. 5-11.
"Road Shark is not just about issuing tickets; it is about fostering a safe driving culture," a brief from the FCPD Public Affairs Bureau reads. "Throughout the campaign, our officers have engaged directly with drivers to emphasize the dangers of distracted driving and the importance of following speed limits."
The initiative began in 2023 and was rolled out in four waves that led to nearly 25,000 warnings and citations issued last year. This year's campaign has seen an increase, with more than 27,800 citations and warnings already issued so far.
FCPD plans to begin a fifth wave of the Road Shark campaign this year on Oct. 14 as part of its "commitment to making Fairfax County's roads safer."
