LAUREL, Md. — Drivers on the Baltimore-Washington Parkway faced major delays when southbound lanes were shut down for a crash that happened Wednesday night.
United States Park Police first responded to the crash scene on the parkway before Powder Mill Road in Prince George's County around 4:15 a.m. Once on scene, investigators found two cars involved in the crash. One person was taken to an area hospital in critical condition. Another person was hospitalized with injuries not thought to be life-threatening. Police say the crash happened overnight, but could not say exactly when.
Park Police closed all southbound lanes Thursday morning to conduct their investigation. Traffic was being diverted to Route 197 following the closure. As of 8:30 a.m., lanes are still closed. Rubbernecking delays begin at Powder Mill Road. It's not clear how long the road will be closed to traffic, but the closure is expected to be "extended," according to police.
The cause of the crash is still under investigation.
