Man dies in Prince George's County police custody, officers involved identified

The officers involved have been identified as Corporal Alyssa Tomaselli, Corporal Mark Price, and Officer Marvin Marks.

LARGO, Md. — The Independent Investigations Division (IID) of the Maryland Officer of the Attorney General has released the identities of the victim who died in police custody and the officers involved.

On February 16, officers were called to the 10700 block of Lake Arbor Way in Largo for reports of a “suspicious person” knocking on the doors of residents in that neighborhood.

Officers arrived around 7:45 p.m. Once there, an officer located Joseph Holmes, 61, in the roadway. Holmes then walked onto a nearby lawn and laid down, according to the Maryland Office of the Attorney General. The officer immediately called for an ambulance. Two additional officers arrived then, as well.

Holmes was placed in handcuffs "so officers could transport him to a hospital for evaluation," according to a press release from the attorney general. While he was handcuffed, officials say he went into "medical distress."

Officers provided emergency aid, and medics took over resuscitation efforts. Holmes was pronounced dead a short time later.

The officers involved have been identified as Corporal Alyssa Tomaselli, Corporal Mark Price, and Officer Marvin Marks. Officer Andre Brooks with the Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission Police Department was also at the scene.

Officers were wearing body cameras, and the Independent Investigations Division will generally release the footage within 20 business days of an incident.
