FREDERICK, Md. — A water main break in Frederick has resulted in discolored water, officials say.

Crews with the Division of Water and Sewer Utilities are repairing a water main break that occurred Wednesday at the intersection of Baltimore Road and Bells Lane. Water service was restored to customers, however residents in the Spring Ridge area have been experiencing discolored water.

A notice issued to residents states despite the water’s appearance it is not an indication that it is unsafe to ingest. The discoloration could be caused by naturally occurring particles and minerals that have settled over time.

When crews open or close the valves to isolate the main breaks, the normal water flow pattern is disrupted causing the sediment inside to be disturbed. A disinfectant residual is maintained at all times to ensure that water is safe for household use, including cooking and drinking.

Understanding residents' concerns over the appearance of water, a precautionary measure is being taken. Crews from the Division of Water and Sewer Utilities will be collecting bacteriology samples for analysis at the company’s labs.

Although officials say the water is safe to drink and cook with, for aesthetic reasons, residents are being advised to avoid doing laundry until the water clears up.

Anyone with questions is asked to contact the Division of Water and Sewer Utilities at 301-600-1825 or 301-622-2194 for questions after hours.
