Maryland senate race quickly takes shape

Candidates spar over abortion and party loyalty in the opening hours of the campaign.

LARGO, Md. — The potentially history-making race for the U.S. Senate in Maryland quickly took shape in the hours after Democrat Angela Alsobrooks and Republican Larry Hogan claimed primary victories.

Alsobrooks capitalized on her momentum by immediately taking shots at Hogan for a 2022 veto of abortion access funding legislation while he was serving two terms as Maryland's governor.

"Larry Hogan has a record," Alsobrooks told WUSA9's Larry Miller in a one-on-one interview Wednesday. "We know, for example, that he is not pro-choice. He vetoed really important abortion care legislation that would have expanded abortion care in the State of Maryland."

In a speech to supporters Tuesday night in Annapolis, Hogan worked to undercut the criticism.

"To the women of Maryland, you have my word that I will continue to protect your right to make your own reproductive health decisions," Hogan said to cheers from the primary night crowd.

Wednesday Hogan rolled out a new video featuring Democrats who say they’ll cross over to support his campaign to fix the bitterly divided partisan politics in Washington.

Hogan also criticized current Democratic Gov. Wes Moore for promising Tuesday night to "wage the war" to win against Hogan in Maryland.

“Politics shouldn’t be about total war. That’s why Washington is so broken," Hogan posted on Facebook Wednesday in a play to his campaign theme to "fix our broken politics."

In a campaign speech Tuesday night Hogan promised to "stand up to the current president, the former president, the Democratic party and the Republican party."

Alsobrooks called Hogan "BFF's with Mitch McConnell."

“There's so much at stake and I think everyone sees it," Alsobrooks told WUSA9 Wednesday.

"We're talking now about the balance of power in the Senate and whether or not we would hand over power to a party led by Donald Trump."

While Hogan won his primary handily, 30% of Republican voters cast ballots for challenger Robin Ficker, who promised loyalty to Trump.
