ANNAPOLIS, Md. — Angela Alsobrooks is the projected winner of the Democratic nomination for U.S. Senate in Maryland, according to the Associated Press.
Alsobrook has spent months campaigning for the seat and the primary win brings her one step closer to the Senate chamber.
Alsobrooks beat out Rep. David Trone in the primary election despite campaign finance reports showing Trone spent a staggering $47 million to promote his message – far outspending Alsobrooks and her campaign.
“What we have seen in this race, we have literally never seen in United States history," Alsobrooks said of the financing in an interview with WUSA9 earlier this month. "This is the greatest self-funded campaign we have ever seen in a U.S. primary. But all of our polling shows we are now in a statistical tie race with a large number of undecided voters. What we know is that Marylanders are very sophisticated. The money will not determine the outcome of this race.”
Alsobrooks describes herself as a proud, lifelong Marylander, having been born and raised in Prince George's County. Before running for Senate, she served as the Prince George's County Executive and Maryland State's Attorney. Additionally, she was Prince George's County's first full-time domestic violence prosecutor.
Alsobrooks says she hopes to move Maryland forward, building a campaign on the fight to create jobs, bring down the cost of living, improve the health care system, and strengthen education.
“We must have a tax system that is fair,” explained Alsobrooks when asked what she would do as senator to address economic pressures impacting families. “We look at these large corporations who, frankly, are not always paying their fair share. The corporate tax rate is one that former President Donald Trump adjusted to benefit corporations. I'd be in favor or raising the corporate tax rate so that all of us are paying our fair share.”
In November, Alsobrooks will go up against Republican nominee Larry Hogan to replace retiring Sen. Ben Cardin in the U.S. Senate, representing Maryland.
