MARYLAND, USA — Former Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan has won the Republican primary for the state's open U.S. Senate seat.
Hogan now faces the challenge of having to win over both Democrats and Trump-supporters in November’s election. This is the first time both Hogan and former President Donald Trump will appear on the same ballot.
Hogan was born in Washington, D.C. and served two terms as the governor of Maryland. After leaving office at the beginning of 2023, people initially thought he would run for the 2024 presidential election, but declined to seek nomination.
Hogan later endorsed Nikki Haley, who was running against Donald Trump before she dropped out of the race.
During an interview with WUSA9’s Adam Longo, Hogan said if elected to the U.S. Senate he wouldn’t let party loyalty dictate how he would vote on a potential Supreme Court Justice nominee. It wouldn’t be the first time Hogan went against party loyalty.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Trump’s administration issued COVID-19 testing guidance that deliberately went against the CDC’s guidelines. At least 33 states went against Trump’s guidelines, among them was Hogan representing Maryland.
This won’t be the only issue Hogan will have to tackle in this November’s elections. A rise in youth crime throughout the state has been at the top of many residents' mind. Abortion rights are also high on many voters lists of concerns.
When speaking with Adam, Hogan said, he "wouldn't vote for any national abortion ban," noting that he isn't a 'cookie-cutter Republican.'
Now, Hogan will head to November's election as the Republican candidate for the Maryland Senate seat, against Democratic candidate Angela Alsobrooks.
In Hogan's post Primary Election remarks, he says he joined the race because he was concerned about the direction of the nation.
