Smoke from vehicle fire on GW Parkway seen by Lincoln Memorial

Southbound lanes are closed before Key Bridge for the blaze.

ARLINGTON, Va. — Scary posts on social media show smoke billowing near the Lincoln Memorial early Friday. Fire crews in the area say the smoke is not related to any kind of blaze on the National Mall, but rather a vehicle fire on George Washington Memorial Parkway.

DC Fire and EMS quickly posted to X, formerly known as Twitter, as images began to spread. Arlington County fire crews responded to the scene just before 9 a.m. Southbound lanes of GW Parkway were shut down while firefighters battled the blaze involving a pickup truck and a trailer.

Drivers in the area should expect delays and avoid the area if possible. It's not clear when lanes will reopen to traffic.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation. There is no word yet on possible injuries.

Additional details have not been made public. The investigation is active and ongoing.
