60-year-old teacher assistant accused of pushing 12-year-old student into door

The boy was evaluated by a school nurse and was not injured.

WOODBRIDGE, Va. — A 60-year-old teacher's assistant is facing charges after police say he pushed a middle school student into a door earlier this month.

According to the Prince William County Police Department, the alleged assault happened at Belville Middle School on Dale Boulevard in Woodbridge on December 8.

Investigators say 60-year-old Paul Opoku Ampem works at Belville Middle School as a teacher's assistant. Ampem and a 12-year-old student were reportedly walking down a school hallway when Ampem grabbed the student by the shoulders and pushed him into a door before the two separated.

The boy was evaluated by a school nurse and was not injured.

Following an investigation, Ampem was arrested and charged on Tuesday with assault and battery. He has since been released on a court summons.

According to a letter from Belville Middle School Principal Tim Keenan, Ampem has been placed on leave.
