Inmate found dead in his cell at the Arlington County Detention Facility

David Gerhard, who has been held since Nov. 20 on charges of failure to comply with support obligations and contempt of court, died Dec. 12 in his cell.

ARLINGTON, Va. — A 55-year-old man was pronounced dead Tuesday, after being discovered unresponsive in his cell at the Arlington County Detention Facility

David Gerhard was found in his holding cell just before 8 a.m. Police were called to the scene for reports of a cardiac arrest. First responders performend resuscitation efforts until Gerhard could be taken to the Virginia Hospital Center for treatment, but all efforts were unsuccessful and Gerhard died. 

Gerhard has been held at the detention facility since Nov. 20 on charges of failure to comply with support obligations and contempt of court. 

“We extend our condolences to the family of Mr. Gerhard during this difficult time,” Sheriff Jose Quiroz said. 

An autopsy is scheduled with the office of the chief medical examiner to determine the precise cause of Gerhard's death.

The Sheriff’s Office has also initiated an investigation into the in-custody death, per department policy.
