Police search for man in black mask who shot 12-year-old in Fairfax County

Neighbors tell WUSA9 the boy lives in the neighborhood and was outside his home when he was shot.

LINCOLNIA, Va. — Police say a shooting that left a 12-year-old injured in Lincolnia Tuesday afternoon was not a random attack.

According to the Fairfax County Police Department, officers were called to the 4600 block of North Chambliss shortly after 4:15 p.m. by a family member who said a child had been shot.

When officers arrived, they found a 12-year-old suffering from multiple gunshot wounds in the lower body. The 12-year-old was taken to an area hospital for help and is expected to survive.

Neighbors tell WUSA9 that the child lives in the neighborhood and was outside his home when he was shot.

Detectives say the 12-year-old had gotten out of a car and was walking into a nearby home when he was shot from behind by a person who got away in a car.

In a press conference Tuesday, police said multiple suspects left after the shooting and at least one suspect was last seen in a white BMW. Police are asking neighbors to check their cameras. If you see anything suspicious at around 4:18 p.m., call 911.

A day later, police described the suspect as a man wearing a black mask and said they do not believe this was a random attack. Investigators have not released any information regarding a possible motive.

While speaking with people, 18-year-old Demonte Basil was found to be unlawfully concealing a handgun. He was cited for the concealed weapon violation.
