Herndon officer shoots man after woman and dog stabbed, police department says

Police say the husband stabbed the wife, and then he was shot by an officer when he approached them with a knife.

HERNDON, Va. — A woman and man are in critical condition after a violent domestic incident ended with a police shooting in Herndon on Sunday.

Just before noon, officers with the Herndon Police Department responded to the 900 block of First Place after a woman called 911 and said her husband had stabbed her.

When an officer arrived, they made contact with the man, who police say approached the officer with a knife. The officer fired his gun, striking the man in the upper body.

The man and woman were both taken to Reston Hospital with critical injuries. Police said the woman's condition was "stable" while the man underwent surgery and is recovering in the ICU.

The police department said the family dog had also been stabbed. The dog's condition isn't currently known.

No other information has been released.
