Police shoot person armed with a two-by-four in District Heights

Officers responding to a home invasion call found a person stabbed and another holding the piece of wood.

DISTRICT HEIGHTS, Md. — Prince George's County Police officers shot a person armed with a two-by-four while responding to a home invasion call on Sunday morning.

Officers were called to the 1800 block of Addison Road South just before 10 a.m. The 911 caller told officers someone inside had been stabbed, according to Prince George's County Police Chief Malik Aziz.

When officers arrived at the residence, they found one person with stab wounds inside, and another person was holding a two-by-four in the doorway of the home.

The police department said officers told the person with the two-by-four to drop it several times. When the person did not drop the piece of wood, one officer shot the person twice.

"These were individuals who were inside the residence and whatever type of altercation that took place, then became violent," said Aziz.

Police say the person who was stabbed was taken to an area hospital with critical life-threatening injuries. The person shot by police was also taken to the hospital for treatment of critical injuries.

“We’re thankful that nobody else in the house was injured physically and we’re going to get to speak with them so they can give us all of the information that we need, so we can put together the circumstances surrounding, again, a home invasion, a stabbing and an officer involved shooting," said Aziz.

The officer who fired their weapon is a 30-year veteran of law enforcement, Aziz said. The officer has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of an internal investigation. No officers were hurt.

Police have not said what the relationship is between the two people in the house, or how the person ended up stabbed. The investigation is still active and ongoing.

Aziz said there is no threat to the community.

Anyone who may have additional details that would help investigators is asked to contact Prince George's County Crime Solvers at 1-866-411-TIPS.
