Police search for driver of deadly hit-and-run crash on I-270 in Montgomery County

Investigators are still trying to identify the driver of the BMW who rear-ended the Toyota, disabling it, before driving away.

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Md. — Maryland State Police are investigating a hit-and-run crash and a crash that happened right after that resulted in the deaths of two people Friday morning in Montgomery County.

Investigators say Luis Isaac Bran, 17, of Gaithersburg, Maryland, and Rebeca Gabriela Vasquez Moreno, 18, from El Salvador were both pronounced dead following the multi-car crash.

Just before 5 a.m., troopers responded to I-270 northbound between Montrose Road and Route 28 for a crash involving at least three cars, with one car on fire.

Investigators say a Toyota and a 2003 BMW silver convertible were heading north on the highway when the BMW rear-ended the Toyota, disabling it, and drove away. The Toyota was once again rear-ended while in the travel lanes by the driver of a 2015 Ford F-150. The driver of the Ford waited for troopers to arrive and refused medical treatment.

Both victims, Bran and Vasquez Moreno, were identified as passengers in the Toyota. Bran's mother and Moreno's aunt was behind the wheel at the time of the crash. She was taken to an area hospital after the crash to be treated for injuries and is expected to be ok.

Troopers later found the BMW abandoned and disabled on the right shoulder of the highway, about a mile north of the crash.

Investigators are working to identify the driver of the BMW.

Police say alcohol was not a factor in the second crash.

Roads closed for close to six hours, causing major delays Friday morning.

Montgomery County Fire and Rescue also responded to the crash.

Anyone with more information is asked to call police at 301-424-2101.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.
