BETHESDA, Md. — A trooper was struck by a driver while sitting inside of his patrol vehicle early Wednesday in Montgomery County, sparking an investigation into what led up to the collision.
Just after 1 a.m., a Maryland State Trooper was inside of his marked vehicle with emergency lights on while in a work zone on the outer loop of Interstate 495 and Greentree Road. The lane the trooper was in, as well as another lane, were both blocked with traffic cones, arrow board and signs showing it was a work zone ahead.
Through an investigation, it was determined that the driver of a Honda, later identified as 37-year-old Nithya Ramani, of Montgomery Village, drove into the work zone. This is when she struck the right rear-end of the patrol vehicle.
Ramani was not injured in the crash, and the trooper was not taken to a hospital for treatment.
Troopers say Ramani showed signs of being impaired, and was arrested at the location and charged with drinking under the influence.
No one else was in the car with Ramani when she was driving. Both vehicles were towed from the area. The investigation remains active.
