Police are still investigating the crash. Secret Service said there was no threat to the complex.

WASHINGTON — A 57-year-old man from Matthews, North Carolina is dead after crashing into a barrier outside the White House Saturday night.

Just after 10 p.m. on May 4, officers with the Metropolitan Police Department responded to a crash at the intersection of 15th Street and E Street, Northwest.

Police say a driver was speeding westbound on Pennsylvania Avenue when he ran a red light at the intersection of 14th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue and then another red light at 15th Street, NW. He continued driving until he crashed into a White House grounds security checkpoint barrier at the intersection of 15th Street and E Street, NW. He suffered severe injuries on impact and was pronounced dead shortly after the crash.

Investigators have since identified the man as 57-year-old James Chester Lewis Jr., of Matthews, North Carolina.

Police are still trying to determine what caused the crash.

Anthony Guglielmi, Chief of Communications for the United States Secret Service, released a statement on his X account, formerly Twitter, saying "there was no threat to the White House."
