Shots fired in Bowie, 2 people taken into custody

Once at the scene, the tactical team realized there was no home invasion occurring. Rather, a man who lived inside of the home they were sent to, was firing shots.

BOWIE, Md. — Police are investigating shots fired in Bowie.

The initial call came in as a reported home invasion near Sudberry Lane and Spangler Lane in Bowie just before 12:45 p.m. on Tuesday. Bowie Police dispatched the S.T.A.R team which is responsible for active events in the area.

Once at the scene, the tactical team realized there was no home invasion occurring. Rather, a man who lived inside of the residence they were dispatched to, was reportedly shooting live rounds from inside of his home. During a press conference, officials say the tactical team noticed that the man may have been hallucinating and required a mental health evaluation.

Officers were able to place the man under arrest without any further incident. During a preliminary investigation, officers discovered that some of the shots fired went into a neighbor's home. Police say, the owners of the home were inside at the time of the shooting but were not injured.

When WUSA9 crews arrived at the scene, they said they saw a woman also being detained and placed inside a cruiser. Officers say the woman detained and the shooter have a personal relationship and this shooting could have been a domestic situation. They did not clarify what kind of relationship the two had but said the woman was also hallucinating when they detained her.

During a search of the home, officers discovered between seven to eight people inside, at least three of them were children. Officials said in a press conference, that this is not the first time police have been called to this home. But it has never been for something of this magnitude.

Both the shooter and the woman were taken into custody for a psych evaluation. When asked if drugs were involved, police said it was too early to determine and would not have results until after the psych evaluation was done.

Officers say they will talk to the State's Attorney's Office to determine if charges will be brought against them. At this time we do not know the name or ages of the couple taken into custody or the other people inside of the home.
