PRINCE GEORGE'S COUNTY, Md. — A man died while in police custody in Prince George's County Friday night and the Independent Investigations Division of the Maryland Office of the Attorney General is investigating.
At approximately 7:45 p.m., officers responded to a 911 call for a “suspicious person” knocking on doors of homes in the 10700 block of Lake Arbor Way, according to the Maryland Office of the Attorney General.
Once there, an officer located a man in the roadway. Then, the man walked onto a nearby lawn and laid down, according to the Maryland Office of the Attorney General. The officer immediately called for an ambulance. Two additional officers arrived then, as well.
The man was placed in handcuffs "so officers could transport him to a hospital for evaluation," according to a press release from the attorney general. After the man was handcuffed, he went into "medical distress."
Officers provided emergency aid, and medics took over resuscitation efforts. The man was pronounced dead on scene a short time later.
Other details of what happened are unknown.
Officers were wearing body cameras, and the Independent Investigations Division will generally release the footage within 20 business days of an incident.
