Driver arrested, charged in deadly hit-and-run crash

Kelechi Uzodinma, of Woodbridge, Virginia, was charged with felony hit and run.

WOODLAWN, Va. — A 61-year-old Virginia man has been identified as the driver allegedly involved in a deadly hit-and-run crash Sunday evening in Woodlawn.

Kelechi Uzodinma, of Woodbridge, Virginia, was found two miles away from the scene of a deadly crash at the intersection of Richmond Highway and Brevard Court, according to Fairfax County Police. He is accused of hitting a man trying to cross Richmond Highway outside of a crosswalk, and not staying at the scene of the crash.

According to police, Uzodinma was driving a 2015 Lexus south on Richmond Highway when he struck 51-year-old Heliodoro Luna-Perez, of Alexandria. Luna-Perez was taken to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Police responded to the crash scene around 10:40 p.m. Sunday, and after canvassing the area, say they found Uzodinma two miles away. He was arrested and charged with felony hit and run and held at the Fairfax County Detention Center on a $2,500 bond.

The crash is still under investigation, but police do not believe alcohol was a factor. They are still working to determine if speed was a factor.

This was the second deadly pedestrian crash in the county for the year thus far. At this point in 2023, zero deadly pedestrian crashes had occured.
