Burglary suspect dies after being stabbed by resident in Bowie, police say

Police said the suspects pepper sprayed an adult at the front door, and at least one of the suspects had a gun.

BOWIE, Md. — An attempted home break-in took a deadly turn early Monday morning in Bowie. Police are still investigating, and so far, no arrests have been made.

Officers with the Bowie Police Department first responded to the 2700 block of Balsam Place for a report of a residential burglary. The homeowner told police that a fight broke out when suspects tried to break into his home.

Police said the suspects pepper sprayed an adult at the front door, and at least one of the suspects had a gun. That resident stabbed one of the suspects when they made it into the foyer, and the suspects fled the home.

Investigators said one of the suspects "sustained an injury to the upper body" and was taken to the hospital and dropped off. Police say the person later died from their injury, but did not specify how the suspect, who has not been identified, was fatally injured.

The man who was killed was identified Tuesday as 57-year-old Samuel Lee West of Burlington, North Carolina.

Prince George's County homicide detectives were called to investigate. They do not believe the incident was random.
