Police seek suspect who opened fire on officers in Congress Heights

It is unclear if anyone was injured in the shooting.

WASHINGTON β€” DC Police released a still image Saturday of a man they say opened fire on officers in Congress Heights Friday evening, leading to a brief standoff.

Acting Chief Pamela A. Smith said officers responded to the 3400 block of 13th Place just after 8:30 p.m. Friday on a report of gunshots. Smith said when officers arrived, an unknown suspect fired several shots at them. Three officers returned fire. The suspect eventually fled the scene.

No injuries were reported in the shooting.

Smith described the suspect as a Black male with shoulder-length hair. He was last seen wearing a white t-shirt and black pants. A still image of the suspect captured by a nearby public safety camera was released Saturday morning.

DC Police said the officers involved in the shooting were placed on administrative leave, per department policy. A review of their bodyworn camera footage will be conducted.
