Police arrest man for licking trick-or-treater's ear, following her home, and attempting to shoot her mother in Maryland

A search warrant of the man's home was executed and resulted in the seizure of two handguns, one shotgun, a .22 caliber rifle, and ammunition.

SEVERN, Md. — A 66-year-old Maryland man is in custody after police say he licked a girl's ear while she was trick-or-treating Halloween night, followed her back to her home, and tried to shoot her mother. Cedrick Steven Paines of Severn has been placed under arrest and faces charges for his alleged involvement.

At 6:20 p.m. on Tuesday, officers with the Anne Arundel County Police Department responded to a reported assault with a gun in the 8200 block of Dunfield Court in Severn. The victim told police that a man licked her daughter's ear while she was trick-or-treating at the neighbor's home. The child ran back home after being licked, and the man allegedly followed her and attempted to break in her house. Investigators say the mother pushed the man back to prevent him from entering her house. The man then pointed a gun at the mother and pulled the trigger. Fortunately, the gun did not fire.

Police say the man went back to his house, where he was located by responding officers and placed under arrest.

A search warrant of the man's home was executed and resulted in the seizure of two handguns, one shotgun, a .22 caliber rifle, and ammunition.

Although an arrest has been made in this case, detectives are asking anyone with information regarding this attempted break in and shooting or suspect to call 410-222-6155.  Individuals wishing to remain anonymous are encouraged to call the Anne Arundel County Police tip line at 410-222-4700.
