Driver fatally strikes pedestrian in SE DC

Detectives say initial investigation reveals the driver and pedestrian were known to each other.

WASHINGTON — An investigation is underway in Southeast, D.C. after a man was hit and killed by a pickup truck early Saturday morning. Police believe the driver and pedestrian were known to each other.

On Saturday, detectives say a pickup was parked in the 600 block of L Street, SE. At 1:40 a.m., a man was walking westbound, in the street, in the direction of the truck. As the pedestrian reached the driver's side door, the pickup truck began to move and struck the pedestrian.

Police say the pedestrian was taken to an area hospital for help where he later died from his injuries. He has been identified as 37-year-old Torre Desmond Gray Sr. of Temple Hills, Maryland.

Detectives say the driver of the truck fled the scene but later called police.
