WASHINGTON — A D.C. man has been sentenced to 12 years in prison for a stabbing homicide in Southeast.

29-year-old Michael Caldwell was sentenced on Friday for the murder of Damien Thompson.

On June 4, 2023 Caldwell was in the 4300 block of Halley Terrace Southeast around 11:30 p.m.

Thompson and Caldwell got into a verbal argument on the street. As the argument escalated, Thompson threw a bottle at Caldwell. The two continued to argue, at one point Thompson attempted to grab a plastic chair to throw at Caldwell.

Before he could, Caldwell lunged at Thompson, stabbing him in the face. Thompson fell to the ground and was unconscious.

Caldwell then proceeded to stab Thompson eight more times in the chest as he laid defenseless on the ground. He died from his injuries a short time later.

On August 14, 2023 Caldwell pled guilty to voluntary manslaughter. He will now spend 12 years in prison followed by five years of supervised release.
