4 officers on leave after shooting 28-year-old man outside DC apartment complex

Suspect attacked the officer while trying to apprehend him. MPD identified the suspect.

WASHINGTON — Four officers are on administrative leave Monday, while an investigation into a shooting on Saturday morning continues.

The shooting happened just after 10:30 a.m., at the Columbia Plaza Apartments on Virginia Avenue in Foggy Bottom, police said.

In a Saturday press conference, Tatjana Savoy with the Metropolitan Police Department said officers were responding to a welfare check. When they arrived, they determined an individual was experiencing a mental health episode, and Community Response Team members determined the individual was "an immediate danger to himself or others."

Savoy said the Department of Behavioral Health was called and they determined the individual should be taken in for evaluation. The man was later identified as 28-year-old Jonathan Jefferson of Northwest D.C.

Police said while officers were trying to take Jefferson into custody, Jefferson pulled out a knife and stabbed an officer in the neck. The officer's injuries were not thought to be life-threatening.

The officer used his taser, but it "did not take effect," Savoy said.

Savoy said another officer then shot Jefferson, who was hospitalized with injuries not thought to be life-threatening.

Jefferson was arrested on four counts of assault on a police officer.

The officers involved in the shooting have not yet been identified.

The United States Attorney's Office will independently conduct an investigation into the shooting.
