WASHINGTON — The Howard University community is mourning the loss of a beloved bison. Mohamed Samura, 18, was a freshman when he was hit by a car near the School of Business Thursday.
Howard University has since confirmed that the person driving the car that hit Samura is a faculty member.
Samura's mother, Regina Swarray, said her son was always a straight-A student, who loved school and loved making her proud. She told WUSA9, the loss of her son has left her empty inside.
“I had him when I was 20. I grew up with this boy. I am empty,” Swarray said.
The Metropolitan Police Department says the crash happened shortly after 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 11.
Investigators say an Audi sedan was speeding northbound on 6th Street, NW from Howard Place, NW. The Audi then hit a parked car but kept going, later mounting the curb while turning left onto Fairmont Street, where it struck Samura.
Samura died in the hospital 4 days later, with his mother praying by his side.
“The nurse was checking his pulse and it was going down. They did all they could. I was praying. I told him, you know God loves you. He shakes his head and blinks his eyes. I said, you know, he never failed us,” Swarray said.
Swarray worked three jobs to always give her son the best opportunities. Samura was a business major at Howard. He loved music, and working out and, he volunteered at a senior living facility on the weekends.
Swarray doesn’t understand how the driver didn’t see her son but she’s not questioning god.
“You can’t question him. He gives us and he takes. It’s just hard," Swarray said.
No charges have been filed in connection to the deadly crash. The family has a GoFundMe to help with funeral expenses, which has raised more than $15,000 as of April 16.
