DC Police arrest a fugitive for a murder from 2009

The murder remained a cold case for years.

WASHINGTON — Detectives with the Metropolitan Police Department have arrested 40-year-old Randolph Thomas, Jr. in connection to the murder of a young man that occurred back in 2009. The case remained unsolved for over a decade.

On December 31, 2009, a call regarding a shooting in the 200 block of Webster Street, Northeast near Webster Park came into the police department. Responding officers found a 19-year-old, later identified as Emmanuel Durant, Jr., who had been shot. He was rushed to an area hospital where he later died.

Durant’s murder remained a cold case for years. On October 20, a breakthrough in the nearly 15-year-old case occurred when members of D.C.’s Fugitive Unit arrested Thomas.

Now, Thomas is facing a charge of first-degree murder while armed in D.C., which carries a minimum of 30 years.

At this time we do not know why Thomas killed Durant or what his connection was to the 19-year-old. The investigation into the murder is active and ongoing.

A sentencing date has not been set.
