Multiple rescues from DC apartment building on fire

No cause of the fire has yet been determined.

WASHINGTON — Several D.C. residents woke up in a burning building Friday morning, forcing multiple people to have to be rescued from their apartment by firefighters.

Just before 1 a.m. Friday, DC Fire and EMS personnel were sent to the 3000 block of Stanton Road SE for a report of a fire inside a three-story apartment building. When they arrived, smoke could be seen coming from the building. The fire was determined to have started in a second floor apartment.

The fire has since been extinguished (out by 1:15 a.m.) following multiple rescues from a third floor balcony.

No injuries have been reported. Ten people, including six adults and four children, plus one cat are currently displaced following the fire. Red Cross is assisting those impacted.

DC Fire has not yet determined a cause of the fire, and it remains under investigation. It is also not yet known exactly how many people had to be rescued from the building, and who made it out on their own.

As of 2:45 a.m. fire officials said they were still on scene assessing the damage and performing necessay "decontamination and rehabilitation" procedures.
