Boy dead, 3 hurt in Triangle shooting

Police are still investigating what led up to the shooting.

TRIANGLE, Va. — Police in Prince William County are working to learn what led up to a shooting that left a teenage boy dead and three other people hurt Monday night.

Officers responded to the 3700 block of Masthead Trail in Triangle, Virginia for a report of a shooting around 11 p.m., according to a social media post by the police department. Police offered more details Tuesday morning.

A preliminary investigation revealed that a group was in a grass area behind homes in the area when shots were fired. The group left before police arrived. Officers from Prince William County Police and the Town of Dumfries found two people shot nearby. They provided CPR until they were taken to an area hospital. One of the victims, identified as a 15-year-old boy, died from his injuries. The other person, an 18-year-old man, is expected to survive.

While investigating and searching the area, police found another boy who had been grazed by gunfire. The 16-year-old boy was taken to the hospital. Investigators later learned of another man who had been shot had driven himself to the hospital for treatment. The 20-year-old man is expected to be OK.

Police say the incident does not appear random and detectives are actively investigating leads as the investigation continues. Police have not identified the boy killed, per Virginia law.

Anyone who may have information to help investigators should contact Prince William County Police at 703-792-6500.
