Man charged with leaving loaded gun out after child accidentally shoots herself in Cheverly

The child is expected to be OK. Police say the man charged is related to the girl.

CHEVERLY, Md. — A Maryland man faces charges in connection to an accidental shooting involving a 4-year-old child. Police say Jayvon Thomas, 20, left his loaded gun out, which the child found during a game of hide-and-seek and used to accidentally shoot herself.

On Sunday, at 10:45 p.m., officers were sent to an apartment on Landover Road in Cheverly for a child shot. The child, only identified as a 4-year-old girl, was taken to an area hospital after the shooting and is expected to be ok.

No one else in the apartment was injured.

Investigators say the child found the loaded gun under a bed while playing a game of hide-and-seek. She then accidentally fired the gun, shooting herself in the arm. Detectives charged Thomas in connection to the accidental shooting. Police say he is the owner of the gun and left it out, unsecured. He is in custody of the Department of Corrections at this time.

Police say Thomas is related to the child shot.

The gun found has been declared a ghost gun.
