Police investigate deadly accidental shooting involving a toddler

The child's 5-year-old brother and parents were home at the time of the shooting, police say.

COLUMBIA, Md. — A 3-year-old boy is dead after being found shot inside a home in Columbia on Monday. Police believe the shooting was accidental.

Detectives say the deadly shooting occurred inside a home on Harpers Farm Road on July 1. A gun was left unsecured inside the home. 

Police are still trying to determine if the child shot himself or if someone else inside the home fired the gun. At the time of the shooting, the child's 5-year-old brother and parents were home.

Investigators do not believe anyone else was involved. No foul play is suspected.

The investigation into this deadly shooting is active and ongoing.

So far, no charges have been filed.
