3-year-old girl shoots herself in Montgomery Village

Police are still investigating what led up to the shooting. The girl is expected to be OK.

MONTGOMERY VILLAGE, Md. — A 3-year-old girl is in the hospital with a self-inflicted gunshot wound in Montgomery Village. Police say four people who were inside the home at the time of the shooting are being questioned.

According to police department spokesperson Shiera Goff, Montgomery County Police officers were called to the home in the 16800 block of Walkers Choice Road just after noon on Tuesday. No one else was hurt. Goff did not offer any further details as to how the shooting happened. The girl is expected to be OK.

The police department said the 911 call was made by a neighbor.

Police on scene told WUSA9 that the girl's injuries were to the hand and foot and weren't considered to be life-threatening.

It is not clear if there will be any charges in the shooting. Police are working to secure a search warrant for the residence. They said there was also an animal in the home, so Animal Control will need to help deal with that.

This shooting comes just a day after a 4-year-old accidentally shot herself in the arm in Prince George's County. The girl is expected to be ok, but police have charged a 20-year-old man for leaving his loaded gun under a bed where the girl was playing hide-and-seek.

The police department encourages firearm owners to be responsible and conscientious when it comes to the safe handling, use, and storage of firearms. Responsible gun ownership includes keeping firearms secure to prevent theft and prevent those persons prohibited by law from obtaining firearms. Maryland law states that a child under 16 cannot have unsupervised access to a loaded firearm.

Free gun locks are available to the public at each police district station.
