Teen accused of fatally shooting classmate at Joppatowne High School held without bond

Jaylen Rushawn Prince, who has been charged as an adult in the shooting death of his classmate, will remain in custody without bail.

BALTIMORE — A judge denied bail for the 16-year-old accused of shooting and killing his classmate Friday at Joppatowne High School, according to CBS sister station WJZ.

On Friday, Jaylen Rushawn Prince, 16, and Waren Curtis Grant, 15, were inside the boys first floor bathroom at the school. Witnesses told police Prince and Grant were fighting in the bathroom, then Prince grabbed a gun out of his backpack and shot Grant.

Prince left the school, while witnesses called for help. Grant was airlifted to a nearby hospital where he later died from his injuries.

Baltimore Police said they found Prince less than 20 minutes later attempting to break into a house nearby. He has been charged as an adult with murder, first and second-degree assault and the use of a firearm in the commission of a felony or crime of violence.

In an email and text sent to families Saturday night, Harford County Public Schools announced that the school will not bring students back until Thursday. Staff had the option to return at noon on Monday and will return on Tuesday and Wednesday at 8 a.m. The school district will provide information about counseling services available to students and staff.

Several schools in the area were also closed Monday after the shooting.
