Police name teenager who allegedly shot, killed another teen in Maryland high school bathroom

Jaylen Rushawn Prince, 16, has been charged as an adult with murder.

JOPPATOWNE, Md. — Police have named the teenager who allegedly shot and killed another teenager inside Joppatowne High School Friday afternoon.

Jaylen Rushawn Prince, 16, shot another student in a first floor bathroom and fled the school, police say. Prince was arrested Friday after he attempted to break into a nearby house. He was arrested at 12:52 p.m., less than 20 minutes after the shooting.

Prince has been charged as an adult with murder, first and second-degree assault and the use of a firearm in the commission of a felony or crime of violence.

The student who was shot was identified as 15-year-old Waren Curtis Grant. He was air-lifted from the school’s baseball field to a nearby hospital, where he later died.

In a press conference after the shooting, Harford County Sheriff Jeff Gahler said Prince was taken into custody within minutes of the shooting, thanks to community members.

Harford County Sheriff’s Office said it is still investigating what led to the shooting, but said that authorities do not believe there is any ongoing threat to the high school or community, or that any other suspects were involved.

The sheriff’s office says it is not releasing any more information at this time. Police are asking anyone who knows anything about this crime to contact them at 443-409-3555 and talk to Detective Ross with the Criminal Investigations Unit.
