SPOTSYLVANIA, Va. — A Spotsylvania County elementary school assistant principal is facing charges for allegedly abusing one of the students.

On Wednesday, the Spotsylvania County Sheriff's Office received a call from a parent who was claiming that Assistant Principal, Misty Kelley, assaulted their child. The incident took place at Spotswood Elementary School.

According to the child's mother, she noticed her daughter had bruises on her back and rib. When she asked her daughter how she got them, the child said an adult at school grabbed her "because she didn't want to walk."

After further investigation, police were able to identify Kelley as the adult that grabbed the child. The Spotsylvania County Public Schools was contacted and Kelley was placed on administrative leave on Aug. 28.

Kelley is being charged with misdemeanor assault and battery. She turned herself in to sheriff's deputies on Wednesday and has been released on her own recognizance, according to the sheriff's office.
