Woman arrested for assaulting children in her at-home daycare

Child abuse detectives say on multiple occasions she had restrained two children using tape.

BAILEY'S CROSSROADS, Va. — A 47-year-old woman has been arrested for assaulting two children in her at-home daycare in Bailey’s Crossroads.

Sumy Shah ran a county-licensed at-home daycare where child abuse detectives say on multiple occasions she had restrained two children using tape.

Fairfax County officers responded to a report of an assault on Aug. 1, but Shah didn’t turn herself in until Aug. 20. In that time, detectives found evidence to charge her with two counts of misdemeanor assault and two counts of contributing to the delinquency of a minor. Shah was held on an unsecured bond and has since been released.

Police have assigned victim specialists to the children following the assault to help them access appropriate resources and assistance.

The investigation is still ongoing, and detectives ask any witnesses or any other victims to come forward and call their Major Crimes Bureau at 703-246-7800, option 3.
