Bowie officer fired gun after being flagged down by stranded motorist, police say

Police Chief Dwayne Preston said a passing vehicle was struck by the gunfire.

BOWIE, Md. — An officer with the Bowie Police Department has been placed on administrative leave for firing their gun after being flagged down by a stranded motorist on Thursday. 

Police say the shooting happened around 8 a.m. in the area of Northbound Collington Road and Eastbound John Hanson Highway in Bowie. Upon approaching the stranded vehicle, police say the officer fired their gun. It is not clear why the officer fired their gun.

Police Chief Dwayne Preston said no one was hurt in the shooting, but a passing vehicle was hit by the gunfire. The officer will remain on leave pending the outcome of an investigation.

The Prince George’s County Police Special Investigation Response Team is conducting the follow-up investigation. 

“It’s fortunate that no one was injured in this incident. We remain committed to serving the residents of this community," Preston said.
