Fiery crash closes portion of SB I-270, fireworks found nearby

Three people were evaluated for injuries. Multiple packages of fireworks were recovered at the crash site.

ROCKVILLE, Md. — A fiery crash has closed several lanes of Interstate 270 southbound Thursday morning. Drivers were asked to avoid the area, but the lanes have since been cleared.

Investigators say, the crash involving two cars occurred between Montrose Road and the I-270 Spur. One car was fully engulfed in flames, which was caught on video by a WUSA9 viewer. Three people were evaluated by Montgomery County Fire and EMS for injuries following the crash. The driver behind the wheel of the car that caught fire allegedly fled the area before first responders got there.

Police say multiple packages of fireworks were found nearby.

Early Thursday morning, only the center lane was open for travel, to help people get around the crash.

The investigation into the crash is active and ongoing.
